The School of Public Policy invites applications for a Data Analyst. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position normally involves working Monday to Friday, splitting time between the Foothills Campus and the School of Public Policy Office (downtown campus), with a hybrid work program as an option. Peak times for this position will occur near deadlines for reporting analysis and results to project partners. Overtime is rarely expected but can occur due to deadlines.

Reporting to the Project Manager, this position will support the deployment of an AI-integrated web platform, and perform analysis and visualizations on diverse datasets in support of the Child Policy Lab program, which is embedded within the One Child Every Child (OCEC) research initiative. This role will work closely with the Child Policy Lab team members, and in collaboration with OCEC's Comprehensive Data Accelerator.

In 2023, the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) invested $125 million in University of Calgary's One Child Every Child: A Transformational Child Health Research Initiative. This ground-breaking initiative will transform child health research in Canada, promote Indigenous-led knowledge creation and self-determination, and drive discovery and innovation. One Child Every Child is a Parallel Paths project that has Indigenous and non-Indigenous Paths. All members of the program will perform training on work with Indigenous people, communities and data. Experience with Indigenous community-based work is an asset for members of the OCEC research team.

Presentation and communication of research and research results to a variety of audiences and in different venues is also involved (i.e. presentations at conferences, workshops, team meetings as well as in various written publications). Opportunities for applied training are available, related to statistical methods, qualitative inquiry and partner engagement, policy analysis, grant writing, knowledge translation of clinical research into practice and policy and multi-partner collaboration with a range of investigators (policy analysts, epidemiologists, psychologists, qualitative researchers, legal analysts, statisticians and health service agencies).

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Project Support and Coordination (25%)

  • Collaborate regularly and closely with team members (i.e., participation in project meetings and brainstorming sessions) as required.
  • Coordinate with research staff as needed.
  • Collaboratively generate and monitor project timelines, deadlines and milestones, and monitor project resources.
  • Organize time effectively to ensure research results are produced by set deadlines (e.g., reporting) that support overall project timelines.

Data Analysis and Reporting (75%)

  • Perform data cleaning and statistical analyses (including analysis of longitudinal data).
  • Searches, obtains, and reviews literature to determine appropriate analytical techniques as required.
  • Prepare detailed and summative reports with visualizations for internal review, scientific presentation, and research manuscripts.
  • Contribute to the development of policy communication materials related to the studies undertaken.
  • Interpret and communicate complex findings to internal and external stakeholders from various backgrounds.
  • Use technical skills to solve problems encountered during data manipulation and analysis through use of best practices and established processes and procedures.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • BHSc or BSc in a quantitative field such as mathematics, statistics, computer science or related training.
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Candidates with courses in statistics, epidemiology, and/or computer programming will be given priority.
  • Experience coding in Python or other scripting language.
  • Proficient in leveraging AI tools (e.g., Claude Code, LLM-based systems) for code generation, refactoring, and advanced textual analysis (NLP, information extraction, summarization).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • High level of effective organizational, time management and personal initiative skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong team player and able to work independently.
  • High degree of judgement, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Previous experience in the study of child health or disability or medical/psychosocial complexity, and/or education/experience with public policy is an asset.
  • Previous experience in working with rapid or scoping reviews, measurement and evaluation and mixed methods approaches would be an asset.
  • Understanding of OCAP (Ownership, Control, Access, Possession), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action 18 to 24 an asset.
  • Understanding of cultural protocols as it relates to Treaty 6,7,8 (Alberta) an asset.
